The Destination

Northeast China's premier family ski resort

Changbaishan Wanda International Resort sits at the foot of one of Asia's most dramatic volcanic mountains — home to the legendary Heaven Lake crater. Designed by Canada's Ecosign (who planned five Winter Olympics venues), the resort is modern, well-maintained, and significantly less crowded than comparable Japanese or Korean destinations, making it ideal for families finding their snow legs without the chaos.

The Slopes

A mountain built for every level in the family.

Designed by Canada's Ecosign — the same team behind five Winter Olympic venues — Wanda Changbaishan's trail network is laid out deliberately: beginners have plenty of wide, gentle runs to build confidence on, while more adventurous parents can progress to challenging blacks. Nobody has to wait for anyone.

Blue — Intermediate Runs 14 runs
27° average gradient · Good for progressing skiers · Best conditions in the morning

The resort runs two service centres — Guosong and Xiaozhen — each with cable car access to the summit. Our guide will advise on which to use each day based on your family's level and snow conditions.

🌙 Night Skiing Available

Wanda Changbaishan is one of the rare resorts in Asia where you can ski after dark. Daytime sessions run 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with a dedicated night skiing session from 4:30 PM – 9:00 PM under full floodlighting. This opens up your days considerably — mornings can be reserved for off-slope excursions to Heaven Lake, the Mojie forest, or the local food street, and you can still get a full session on the mountain in the evening. A genuine advantage that most ski destinations simply don't offer.

Wanda Changbaishan Resort — official trail map

RECOMMENDED FOR BEGINNERS
Guosong Service Centre
Quieter than Xiaozhen and ideal for first-timers — fewer skiers means more space to practice without worry. Adjacent to the Wanda Jin Resort, so it's a short walk from most hotels. The magic carpet area here is long, wide, and perfectly gentle for children getting their first feel for snow.
PROGRESSION & VARIETY
Xiaozhen (Little Town) Service Centre
The larger of the two centres, with a greater mix of beginner and intermediate slopes, making it the hub for families where different members are at different levels. More facilities on-site including slope-side restaurants and equipment rental. Best for days when the group wants to split up and ski their own runs.

Beyond the Slopes

When skis come off, the fun doesn't stop.

Wanda Changbaishan is a full resort destination — there's plenty to fill off-ski days and evenings, especially for children who want variety.

Hannashan Hot Springs outdoor pools in winter
♨️ Hannashan Hot Springs
A geothermal hot spring complex within the resort grounds, adjacent to most hotels. Soaking in outdoor pools at −15°C with steam rising around you is one of those childhood memories that lasts a lifetime. Many hotel packages include one complimentary visit.
Wanda Water Park indoor slides and pools
🌊 Wanda Water Park
An indoor water park operating during the winter season (December–March) — a great option for rest days or younger children. Several hotels include water park day passes in their winter packages.
WowCool Snow Park rides and animal interactions
🛷 WowCool Snow Park
Perfect for all ages with a multitude of rides and animal interactions — snow tubing, sledding, themed snow play zones, and up-close wildlife encounters make this a resort highlight. No ski experience needed, and children absolutely love it. Included in many hotel winter packages.
Wanda Changbaishan shopping street with restaurants and shops
🛍️ Wanda Shopping Street
The vibrant heart of the resort town — a pedestrian shopping street lined with restaurants, cafés, and specialty stores. Grab authentic northeastern Chinese street food, duck into the Wanda Cinema for a film after dinner, or pick up Changbaishan souvenirs and local gifts. Easily walkable from all hotels and a perfect way to wind down your evenings.

Add-On Excursions

Beyond the resort — Changbaishan's natural wonders.

The resort is your base, but Changbaishan itself has remarkable experiences within reach. We can build select day trips into your itinerary.

Heaven Lake Tianchi volcanic crater lake in winter
🌋 Heaven Lake (Tianchi)
Changbaishan's crown jewel — a volcanic crater lake frozen solid in winter, surrounded by 16 peaks blanketed in snow. The scale is breathtaking and unlike anything in Southeast Asia. In winter, access is by snowmobile from the road end — an adventure children love in itself.
~30 min from resort Full day
Changbai Waterfall frozen in winter
🧊 Changbai Waterfall & Ice Falls
In summer a roaring cascade — in winter it partially freezes into dramatic ice formations against dark volcanic rock. A short walk from the Heaven Lake snowmobile area; easily combined on the same day.
Combined with Heaven Lake Full day
Mojie river rafting through rime forest
🌫️ Mojie Rime Forest & River Rafting
A geothermally-fed river that never freezes, surrounded by mist and frost-covered trees locals call the "demon world" forest. A peaceful short rafting run through this winter wonderland — eerie and magical in equal measure. Suitable for children.
~45 min from resort Half day
Ice fishing on a frozen lake in winter
🎣 Ice Fishing on a Frozen Lake
A quintessential Changbaishan winter activity. Holes are drilled through the thick ice of a frozen lake and you're set up with rods and bait inside a cosy heated tent — making it perfectly comfortable even for young children. What you catch can be grilled on skewers right at the lakeside. A hands-on, memorable family experience that's uniquely Northeast China.

Traditional Chinese Hanfu costume photoshoot in snow
📸 Hanfu & Ethnic Costume Photoshoot
Step into a fairytale against the snowy mountain backdrop. Professional stylists fit you with exquisite traditional Chinese Hanfu or ethnic minority costumes, with full makeup and hair accessories tailored to each person. Solo portraits or full family group shots — with Changbaishan's winter scenery as your backdrop, the results are stunning. Available in English. Great keepsake for the trip.

Food & Dining

From iron pot stew to familiar favourites.

The resort town has a dedicated food street within walking distance of all hotels, covering everything from authentic Northeast Chinese cuisine to international brands. Picky eaters and adventurous ones alike are well catered for.

Northeast Chinese iron pot stew bubbling at the table
Northeast Iron Pot Stew (铁锅炖)
The signature dish of Jilin Province — slow-cooked meat, tofu, glass noodles and vegetables in a massive iron pot, served steaming at the table. Deeply warming after a day on the slopes. A uniquely Northeast China experience.
🍴 Must-try — the regional signature dish
Meat grilling on volcanic rock hot plate
Volcanic Rock BBQ (火山岩烤肉)
Meat grilled on heated iron plates made from Changbai Mountain volcanic rock, which locks in juices. Located on Commercial Street opposite Hannashan Hot Spring. Great for post-hot-spring dinners. Staff will help grill if you're unsure how.
📍 Shiyu BBQ, Commercial Street — open until 10pm
Korean style bibimbap bowl
Korean-Style Cuisine
Given Changbaishan's location on the Chinese-North Korean border, Korean-influenced food is genuinely local here — not imported. Expect bibimbap, Korean BBQ, and cold noodles alongside Chinese staples. Several restaurants on the food street specialise in this.
🇰🇷 Authentic, not tourist-adapted
Chinese BBQ skewers chuanr over charcoal
Chinese Skewers & Street Food
Chuanr (串) — thin skewers of marinated lamb, chicken, and vegetables grilled over charcoal with cumin and chilli — are a Chinese street food institution. The Wanda food street has multiple stalls firing these up every evening. Kids absolutely love them.
🍢 Great for kids and quick bites
KFC at Changbaishan resort
KFC
Yes, there's a KFC in the resort town. For picky eaters or jet-lagged children in the first few days, it's there when you need it. No judgement — it's a useful safety net for families.
📍 Resort town food street
McDonald's at Changbaishan resort
McDonald's
Another familiar option within the resort precinct. Useful for quick breakfasts, post-ski snacks, or when energy levels are low and decisions are hard after a long day on the mountain.
📍 Resort town food street
Starbucks at Changbaishan resort
Starbucks
A Starbucks in the resort town makes for a perfect mid-morning pit stop or après-ski wind-down. Grab a hot drink before heading to the slopes, or warm up with your favourite order after a full day of skiing. A familiar comfort when you're far from home.
📍 Resort town — open early till late
Hotel breakfast buffet spread
Hotel Buffets
Most 4 and 5-star hotels offer extensive breakfast buffets combining Chinese and Western options — noodles, congee, dumplings alongside eggs, bread, and pastries. Often the most family-friendly meal of the day with something for everyone.

Still primarily a ski day, but one that reminds everyone why this sport is addictive. Farewell dinner together on Commercial Street to close out the slopes.

from 15:30 Rest
Happy Hour / Rest Time
Skis off. A well-earned wind-down at the resort — warm drinks, a hot soak, or simply back to the room to let the legs recover. The kids usually crash; the adults celebrate with something warm. 15:30–17:00.
