Singapore Families · Practical Guide

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go.

Visas, internet, payments, language — the honest answers to the questions every Singapore family asks before booking a trip to China.

"Is China complicated for a family trip?" — it's the first question most people ask us. The honest answer: not really, once you know what to expect.

Changbaishan is a purpose-built international resort, so much of the friction you might expect from travelling in China simply doesn't apply here. The hotels are globally branded and English-speaking. The ski instructors in our programme are English-speaking. The food street has KFC and McDonald's alongside its authentic local options.

Where most travellers to China hit friction — internet access, payments, staying connected — ETEX has already taken care of it for you. This page explains what we've arranged on your behalf, and the few simple steps to get set up before you fly.

Getting There

Flights from Singapore

There are no direct flights from Singapore to Changbaishan — the journey involves two legs: an international flight from Singapore into a major Chinese hub city, followed by a shorter domestic connection to Changbaishan Airport (NBS). Total journey time is typically 8–10 hours in the air, plus your layover at the hub.

📍 About Changbaishan Airport (NBS)
Changbaishan Airport is a small regional airport purpose-built to serve the Wanda resort — and it's only 25 minutes from the hotel cluster. Domestic routes operate primarily during the winter ski season (November–March), so flight availability can be limited — book early. If direct NBS connections are unavailable for your dates, we can arrange alternatives via Yanji (YBP) or Shenyang (SHE) with an onward private transfer to the resort. Flight booking assistance is available to all enquiring families.

Based on current international leg fares for Dec 2026. Domestic leg prices are not yet released — the winter season flight calendar typically opens a few months before departure.
🔔 ETEX will monitor fares and share good deals
Once you're in our enquiry list, we'll keep you updated when the domestic flight calendar is released and alert you to good fares as they appear. We're hoping prices come down further as the global situation stabilises — and we'll be watching closely to pass on any deals we find.
Not comfortable booking your own flights? We can arrange the full journey for your family — international and domestic legs — as part of your package. Just let us know when you enquire.

Entry Requirements

Visa

Good news: as a Singapore passport holder, you don't need a visa to enter China. Singapore and China have a mutual visa-free arrangement, and it covers this trip.

🇸🇬 Do Singapore citizens need a visa for China?
No. Singapore passport holders can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days under the current bilateral arrangement. You present your Singapore passport at immigration — no application, no sticker, no fee.
📅 How long does my passport need to be valid?
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Check all family members' passports well before booking — renewing a child's passport in a rush is avoidable stress.
👧 Do children need their own passports?
Yes. Every traveller, including infants, needs their own Singapore passport. Children cannot be added to a parent's passport for international travel. Ensure children's passports are current and have at least 6 months validity beyond the trip.
📋 Is there any arrival paperwork?
China now offers an online pre-arrival card that can be completed up to 48 hours before your flight — saving time at immigration on arrival. It's a straightforward form covering passport details and accommodation address (we'll provide the hotel address in your pre-trip pack). Complete your pre-arrival card here →
🌍 Travelling on a non-Singapore passport?
Visa requirements vary by nationality. If you or any member of your family holds a non-Singapore passport, check your specific requirements at the Chinese Embassy in Singapore →. We're happy to advise based on your situation when you enquire.
Leave the monitoring to us
Entry regulations can change. As part of our end-to-end service, ETEX actively tracks Singapore–China visa and entry requirements and will proactively inform all booked families of any changes that affect their trip. You don't need to check anything — that's our job.
📱
Connectivity

Internet & Apps in China

China restricts many of the apps families use daily — WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube are not accessible on standard networks. For most travellers, navigating this is a headache. For ETEX families, it isn't — because we've already solved it.

📶 Every adult guest receives a complimentary ETEX e-SIM
Our e-SIM routes your data through an international network, bypassing China's restrictions entirely. Install it on your phone before departure and your internet experience in China is identical to home — WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube all work normally, without any extra setup or technical knowledge. No workarounds. No hassle. This is included in your package for all adult travellers.

App Status with ETEX e-SIM

WhatsApp
Works normally with the ETEX e-SIM. Stay in touch with family back home exactly as you would in Singapore.
Google (Search, Translate, Gmail)
All Google services work normally. Use Google Translate at restaurants and Google Search as usual.
Instagram & Facebook
Both work normally. Post your slope photos and hot spring moments in real time.
YouTube
Works normally. Uninterrupted streaming for the kids during downtime at the hotel.
Baidu Maps
China's most accurate local mapping app. We recommend downloading it — it has the best coverage of resort roads, lifts, and nearby attractions.
Alipay / WeChat Pay
Both work natively and support foreign-linked Visa or Mastercard. Set up either (or both) before departure for seamless mobile payments throughout the resort.
📡
On the Mountain

Staying Connected at the Resort

The resort has solid cellular coverage and hotel WiFi across all properties. Here's what to expect and how ETEX keeps everyone in the loop.

🏨 Does the hotel have WiFi?
Yes. All 4 and 5-star hotels at Wanda Changbaishan have WiFi throughout the property, including rooms. Combined with your ETEX e-SIM, you'll have reliable, unrestricted internet whether you're in the hotel or out on the resort.
📶 What's cellular coverage like on the slopes?
Coverage at the base areas is good. At higher elevations and in lifts, it can be patchier — don't count on consistent signal mid-mountain. The resort is not vast, so this is rarely a practical problem, and our meeting point briefing on Day 1 covers this.
💬 How does ETEX communicate with the group?
We set up a group WhatsApp chat for all travelling families before departure. This is how our on-site representative shares daily updates, slope conditions, activity schedules, and meeting points — using the same app you already use every day.
👪 If kids and parents separate on the slopes
Our lesson groups keep children with coaches at all times — they're never unsupervised. But if your family does split up across different runs, agree on a meeting point at the base of each service centre before heading up. The resort is well-signposted. Our rep will brief all families on this during the first-morning orientation.

Money Matters

Payments & Currency

China has largely moved to mobile payments, but the good news for foreign visitors is that this has become significantly more foreigner-friendly in recent years. Here's how to handle money without friction.

📱
Alipay & WeChat Pay
China's two dominant mobile payment platforms — both now support foreign-linked Visa or Mastercard cards, with no Chinese bank account needed. Download either app, link your card in Singapore before departure, and you can pay for virtually anything at the resort with a single tap: street food, excursion add-ons, souvenirs, and more.
Recommended
💳
Credit & Debit Cards
International Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all 4 and 5-star hotel restaurants, front desks, and larger resort shops. Smaller food stalls and street vendors typically only accept mobile payment. Bring your card but don't rely on it exclusively.
Useful
💵
Cash (RMB / Chinese Yuan)
Still useful as a backup, especially for smaller purchases or in the rare case a vendor doesn't accept mobile payment. Exchange SGD to RMB at Singapore moneychangers before departure — rates are better than airport counters in both Singapore and China. Bring a modest amount; you won't need much.
Good Backup
💡 Our Recommendation
Set up Alipay with your Visa or Mastercard before you leave Singapore. It takes about 10 minutes and means you can pay for anything at the resort — street food, excursion add-ons, souvenirs — with a single tap. Carry RMB 500–800 per adult as a backup. You'll likely spend very little of it.

Communication

Language

The language situation at Wanda Changbaishan is genuinely manageable for English-only families — especially within our programme. Here's what to expect in different situations.

🏨 At the hotels?
All internationally branded hotels (Park Hyatt, Westin, Sheraton, Hyatt Regency) have English-speaking front desk and concierge staff. You won't need Mandarin for check-in, requests, or dining at the hotel restaurant.
⛷️ For ski lessons?
All instructors in the ETEX programme are English-speaking. Your children will be coached and briefed entirely in English. This is a core part of what we arrange — we do not place families with Mandarin-only instructors.
🍜 At restaurants and food stalls?
Varies. International chains (KFC, McDonald's, Starbucks) are fine in English. Local restaurants often have picture menus — pointing works. And with your ETEX e-SIM, Google Translate works fully — point your camera at any menu or sign for an instant translation. Locals are generally patient and friendly regardless.
🗺️ For day excursions?
Our ETEX representative accompanies all guided group excursions and handles all local communication. For any independently arranged activity (e.g., the Hanfu photoshoot), operators at the resort are experienced with international guests and can manage basic English.
Useful apps to download before departure
Google Translate With your ETEX e-SIM, Google Translate works fully in China. The camera translation feature — point your phone at any menu or sign for an instant translation — is genuinely handy at local restaurants and shops.
Baidu Maps Download this before departure — it has the most accurate coverage of resort roads, lift stations, and nearby attractions. More reliable locally than Google Maps for navigating within the Changbaishan area.
A few basic phrases 谢谢 (Xiè xie — thank you), 多少钱 (Duō shao qián — how much?), and 好的 (Hǎo de — okay) will earn you smiles and good service. Singaporeans with even basic Mandarin will find the trip very comfortable.
